Monitor Arms and Why Your Neck Will Thank You

By Muhammad Safiullah

The top of the screen should meet your eyes. Stacks of books are a temporary fix.

Check VESA holes and the monitor weight. An arm rated below the panel will droop by next week.
Solid wood and thick MDF take a clamp. Hollow IKEA-style tops often need a grommet plate or a wider clamp pad so the chipboard does not crush.

Weight and clamp come first

Leave room behind the desk for the arm to fold. A unit against a wall needs a short-throw model.

Arm plus cable routing. Desk gained space and I stopped leaning into the laptop.

Route the cables through the arm. That is half the reason the desk looks cleaner.

Measure before you buy

If you use two screens, get an arm designed for two. Stacking random arms fights the desk edge.
  • VESA size and weight confirmed.
  • A desk thick enough for the clamp.
  • Clearance behind the screen.
  • Cables inside the arm, not over it.
  • Height set while you are sitting.
We can measure a monitor you already own if you bring the model number or the box.
