Cable Management That Takes Fifteen Minutes

By Muhammad Safiullah

You do not need a custom desk. You need fewer cables in the camera frame.

Unplug everything, put the power strip where your legs will not kick it, and bring only the leads you still use back to the desktop.
Velcro, not zip ties, unless you never want to move a cable again. You will move a cable again.

Do it in one sitting

A tray under the desk hides bricks. Clips along the back edge keep the monitor cables in a single drop.

Fifteen minutes and a pack of clips. I can finally sweep under the desk.

Leave slack at the arm and at the chair. Tight cables fail at the strain relief.

Clips and trays at the counter

Label both ends of anything that goes behind the PC. Future-you will not remember which HDMI is the capture card.
  • One power strip you can reach.
  • Velcro for anything you might unplug.
  • A tray or clips under the rear edge.
  • Slack at moving parts.
  • Labels behind the PC.
Wireless peripherals cut two cables. That is often enough to make the rest look tidy.
